Drawing on the rich source of insight and inspiration in The Divine Comedy, Alan Jones guides contemporary readers through the challenges, passages and rewards of the spiritual life. Following the paths and perils of Dante's descent into hell, climb to purgatory and eventual ascent into heaven, Jones draws on the poet's wisdom and psychological insight to explore the three movements of the spiritual journey.

A fascinating journey of the soul through Dante's Divine Comedy that will challenge and inspire contemporary spiritual seekers. From Booklist:
Dante is not so much the guide to this spiritual journey as its inspiration and--by way of the Divine Comedy--one source of its framework. Like Dante, Jones describes the spiritual life in terms familiar from Christian mystical tradition as a progression from the dark night of the soul (Dante's descent into hell), through purgation, to union. There is as much of Jungian spirituality as of Dante in this journey, and that is likely to put a familiar spin on territory that might otherwise be unfamiliar to contemporary seekers. In this sense, Jones is the guide and Dante the destination. The book is sprinkled with curiously postmodern attacks on postmodernism; Jones advocates a playful seriousness toward language that could almost find a home in critic Jacques Derrida, as it almost finds a home in Dante.
