Ashleigh's dreams are in tatters....
Ashleigh Griffen is thrilled when the owner of the horse farm where she lives puts her favorite horse, Wonder, into training as a Thoroughbred racer. Ashleigh has spent the past year turning the sickly filly into a beautiful, healthy yearling.
Ashleigh knows Wonder could be great, but Wonder dislikes her harsh new trainer. Soon she's bucking and disobeying all his commands. Ashleigh is heartbroken when the trainer says Wonder is untrainable...useless.
Even worse, Wonder doesn't seem to know Ashleigh anymore. One day after Wonder fiercely throws her, Ashleigh becomes afraid of her own horse. Maybe the trainer was right after all-maybe it's time to give up on Wonder....
Read Thoroughbred and experience the love and friendship between a determined girl and a very special filly.

Joanna Campbell appears here with her six-year-old Thoroughbred, Meyersville Magic, known around the barn as CC. He's a son of Horatius out of Northwich by Timothy's Champ and is owned by Cathy Day. Formerly trained for racing, he is now being trained for eventing. Last Year he was the Maine Entry Level Champion in Combined Training. From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-8-- Ashleigh Griffen, 13, loves the yearling filly, Wonder. She has nursed the young horse and dreams of her triumphs on the track. Like Farley's Alec Ramsey in The Black Stallion , she finds an ally in a crusty old trainer, Charlie, who sympathizes with her when a brash young trainer treats the animal harshly. Ashleigh frets about Wonder throughout the book's first half, and the story abruptly changes when the horse farm abandons training the willful horse and Charlie and the girl secretly transform her into a potential champion. Ashleigh becomes a more interesting character as she matures from a complaining child into a confident exercise rider. Readers will enjoy watching her growth and understand her fear while she learns to handle the excitable animal. Unfortunately, the book frequently lapses into sentimentality. Ashleigh persistently states how Wonder's devotion will overcome all obstacles--such love exists only in stories like this one. --Charlene Strickland, formerly at Albuquerque Public Library , NM
