This easy - to - read and timely volume will come as a great delight to those for whom books on the European Community (EC) are either dreary discussions of pigs, steel ore, and ECUs or vague rhetoric about "1992." Krause puts a much-needed human face on the EC and on the tangle of personalities, issues, challenges, and problems that lie ahead. While the book is not as well written as Krause's background ith the International Herald Tribune and Business Week would suggest it might be, it does offer a fast-paced insider's survey with interesting and at time remarkable insights about the growing irrelevance of America as an economic power, the new capitalist networks, the role of Japan, etc. Krause's conclusions--the unification process is irreversible, France and Germany are building an alliance within--pose new and urgent questions for Americans. Are we ready for 1992? Recommended for all international affairs collections.

This valuable book by the corporate editor of the International Herald Tribune analyzes Western Europe's determined move toward monetary and political union. Krause reveals how, for the first time since its founding in 1958, the Common Market is challenging the U.S. and Japan for dominance in world trade and high technology. He examines the erosion of American influence and the growing wave of European acquisition of U.S. companies, banks and property. Krause predicts that the 1990s will be recognized as the "Decade of Europe," also that the 12-nation Common Market, headquartered in Brussels ("the Washington, D.C. of Western Europe") will form the core of a loose federation with a single currency and lowered trade barriers, and is destined to wield tremendous geopolitical clout. A judicious look at the New Europe by an experienced and informed observer.
