Grade 3-5-- Danny "Rotten Egg Paterson" earns his nickname by trying to hatch an emu egg that he had saved from a hungry goanna lizard in the Australian scrublands. His nemesis is Hacker Belton, who first teases Danny by tossing the egg around and then maliciously places it near a goanna in a school nature - day exhibit. Danny foils the bully by rescuing the chick and hiding it under his shirt, where it pecks its way out during a class recital. The chick becomes a symbol to the town of the need for preserving wildlife. Filled with description of Australian scenery and wildlife, this simple, appealing novel offers a glimpse of life at home and at school in another part of the world, as well as a gentle message on the importance and beauty of nature. The shy boy's struggle against a bully will touch a universal chord. The novel is marred, however, by the stereotyped depiction of the town librarian--a wrinkled, bespectacled, unhelpful woman who shushes Danny in an almost empty library. Softly shaded black-and-white pencil illustrations will help readers to picture the unusual animals and settings.
