Annie tries unsuccessfully to keep her 190 pets out of the company room to avoid frightening her friend Priscilla.

Grade 1-3 Pretty young Annie Tree lives with the 190 pets enumerated in the title. When she attempts to entertain her friend Priscilla Wicket, the animals are all over the tea party in no time, and Priscilla is overcome. When Annie builds a room in which to entertain (no pets allowed), two shy spiders appear, and once again Priscilla flees. At last, however, the guest decides she must accept her friend's way of life, and the two finally enjoy their visit. The softly colored illustrations are attractive enough; the animals (those with four feet, at least) quite charming; the interiors of chaos and clutter amusing; but the story line is just too difficult to accept. Anyone keeping that many cats and dogs in a small house, much less harboring untold numbers of mice and spiders is well on the way to serious eccentricity and is not a fit subject for even the gentlest fun. The story is too silly, and it fails to win the willing suspension of disbelief that is required of a fantasy audience. Joan McGrath, Education Centre Library, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
