9780060156336: Sandeagozu

In 1932, an exotic dancer from the Midwest, destined for Hollywood and stardom, is forced to sell her snake to a pet dealer in New York City, but this is nor ordinary vaudevillian reptile. This is the regal Sherahi, the largest python on earth. The pythoness becomes one of the unwanted animals, a Cull, and with her companions, the thoughtful Manu (a langur), the exuberant Dervish (a coatimundi), the loquacious Duchess (a scarlet macaw), and the hot-tempered Junior (a rattlesnake), Sherahi, whose name means "tiger killer" in the ancient language of the Elder Race, escapes on a journey in search of SANDEAGOZU, the glorious place where animals live in peach and freedom. to get there, the Culls must do battle with the people of the Norse, the rats who terrorize the subways, with the Holy White Crocodiles, who rule beneath the city streets, and with the coffin Bearer gulls, who scavenge the banks of the East River. then the culls must survive Brooklyn and travel all the way across Depression America, pursued by hunters as they go, until they reach SANDEAGOZU, the San Diego Zoo. Throughout their journey, Sherahi inwits (sends her mind forward in space and time) to commune with the great serpent gods who once ruled the world. Finally alone, Sherahi must face both past and future and come full circle in SANDEAGOZU. The author, Janann V. Jenner teaches biology at new York University. She has studied snakes in the field throughout America and in Asia.

From Publishers Weekly:

A 30-ft. python named Sherahi is at the center of this urban Jungle Book. Captured in Burma in 1921, despite her formidable mental powers, Sherahi spends years as a living prop in a burlesque routine before being sold to Leftrack's Pet Emporium in New York City. There she meets the other "culls" (sick and unsalable animals) who tell her of the paradisial Sandeagozu (i.e. The San Diego Zoo) where it is always warm and there are no cages. With four companionsa coatimundi, a macaw, a langur monkey and a rattlesnakeshe escapes into a wintry New York subway and the lairs of ancient white crocodiles before continuing west toward her goal. Although the natural science background is interesting and detailed (the author is a herpetologist), the animals are as anthropomorphized as in any Disney nature film. As a result, the characters are appealing but their melodramatic adventures among stereotyped, mostly cruel humans will do best with animal advocates and fans of such works as The Incredible Journey and Watership Down. From Library Journal:

The heroine of this fantasy is Sherahi, a 30-foot-long Burmese python with astonishing trans-species mind-reading and telepathic powers. From the dreary confines of a pet emporium in New York City, where exotic dancer Ruthie has abandoned her, Sherahi escapes with a coatimundi, langur, cascabel, and macaw whom she has befriended. Together they survive an imperiled journey to Sandeagozu (the San Diego Zoo?), an imagined Shangri-la for animals, by outsmarting crocodiles in subterranean New York and hitchhiking west. In this novel, animals, particularly snakes, clearly possess the superior minds and emotions; humans are merely tolerated as creatures of greed and ignorance. Though the feats of psychic maneuvering tend to become redundant, this generally well-written first novel will appeal to ophidiaphiles and fans of fantasy.Carol J. Lichtenberg, Washington State Univ.
