Review:
A salty, magical tale...This is a rich literary work -- simple, poetic, challenging yet easily readable...Helen Cresswell's gift for exploring language in a way a child can enjoy, and her ability to tell a cracking good tale, are all here (Times Educational Supplement)

A gentle, timeless fairy tale is woven in this beautiful book...The language is enriching but accessible, and Jason Cockcroft's misty black and white illustrations perfectly mirror the atmosphere created (The School Librarian)

A deeply imaginative experience...weaves a spell that lingers long after the reading is done (BBC Family Life)
