Book Description Allen & Unwin, 1968. Book Condition: Very Good. 1968. Hardcover. Allen & Unwin, 1968; 1st edn. with paper dust cover, spine color slightly faded but text perfect; dark brown cloth with intaglio decoration, in mint condition; 248pp with index, 27 plates, some line illustrations in text. This graphic, illustrated survey of the year 1900 recaptures the major events of the last Victorian year, the end of a century, the passing of a way of life. It is not concerned with the Edwardian age, but with the great Queen's last year and the events leading up to it. 1900 marked the close of a period of astonishing discovery and achievement, and when the Queen died in 1901, people felt that nothing would ever be the same again. In South Africa the British armies were righting an irregular force of Boer farmers, but, in spite of the relief of Mafeking and Ladysmith and the triumphant return of Lord Roberts from the front, victory was still a long way off. The year was one of international import. In the United States, President McKinley was leading an expansionist policy; in Brussels a boy tried to kill the Prince of Wales; in Ireland the Queen reviewed her troops; in Germany the first Zeppelin rose in the skies. It was a lively, vulgar age. Art nouveau was in fashion, the music hall artists were in their prime, and Sir Henry Irving, the first actor to be knighted, was the great man of the stage. The first motor cars were chugging along the dusty roads of Europe, and the Wright brothers were at work on their gliding experiments. In an age when the cinematograph and the bioscope were influencing the lives of the public, there were still great contrasts. As Disraeli observed, there were two nations in England-one rich, one poor. 8?x5?". . . . . . Bookseller Inventory # KEB0001625
