Rosemarie Said Zahlan tells the story of their formation of the modern Gulf states, their evolution from colonial dependency to statehood, and their fairy-tale transformation by oil. She illuminates their relationship with each other, with the wider Arab world and, crucially, with the major world powers. The result is an informed and balanced picture of the political, economic, religious and cultural character of the area.

Review:
‘an illuminating, concise, crisply written book’ -- Middle East Business Weekly
About the Author:
Dr Rosemarie Said Zahlan is a leading authority on the Gulf who has pioneered the development and understanding of the subject. She has written the first account of the Dubai Reform Movement (1970), the first comprehensive history of the United Arab Emirates, The Origins of the United Arab Emirates (1978) and the first history of Qatar, The Creation of Qatar (1969 and 1986), and a number of other works. Her forthcoming book, The Gulf States in the Twentieth Century: Isolation or Centre Stage?, will add considerably to our understanding of the history and politics of the Gulf States throughout the twentieth century.

The book is based on a wide range of primary materials, including recently declassified documents used here for the first time. It defines and describes the geopolitical framework of the region and the state system which emanated from it. It explains how the Gulf states owe their creation and survival, sometimes against many odds, to forces well beyond the waters of the Gulf. The author tells the story of the formation of the states, their evolution from colonial dependency to statehood, their socio-economic transformation by oil, and their stability in the midst of change. She illuminates their relationships with each other, with the wider world, and with the major world powers. #35142. Seller Inventory # 005615
