Thor Heyerdahl gives an account of the historical and archaeological discoveries on the Maldive Islands. When he was invited by the government of the Maldive Islands to investigate recent archaeological finds there, his reaction was one of surprise. He knew very little about these "dots on the map of the Indian Ocean". However, an historical and archaeological mystery story unfolded as he investigated the Maldive past and embarked on a quest which led him as far afield as Sri Lanka and the west coast of India to Hindu and Buddhist remains, to buildings, constructions, carvings, beads and cowrie shells left by the vanished civilizations of Sumer, Mesopotamia, Bahrain and the Indus Valley. The picture of the Maldive Islands that he builds up is of islands which, far from being remote and insignificant, formed a central point for early-eastern, pre-European civilization as they traded, emigrated, rose and declined. Thor Heyerdahl is the author of several books including "The Kon-Tiki Expedition", "The Ra Expedition" and "Tigris".
