9780030545894: International Political Economy: The Struggle for Power and Wealth

INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY focuses on the dynamics of conflict and cooperation among nations as each pursues power and wealth through international economic exchange. The authors provide a historical and topical overview of the development of the world economy from 1815 to the present, helping students understand how and why major economic powers rise and fall. This balanced blend of history, theory, and policy makes the book suitable as a main text for International Political Economy courses or as a supplemental text for an Introductory International Relations course.

About the Author:

Thomas D. Lairson is the Ronald G. and N. Jayne Gelbman Professor of International Business and Professor of Political Science at Rollins College, where he has taught since 1976. Professor Lairson has served as the First Ford Foundation Professor of International Relations for the Institute for International Relations in Hanoi and is currently the coordinator of a newly funded academic program for Sustainable Development and the Environment at Rollins College.

David Skidmore is the Director of the International Relations program and the Elsworth Woods Fund at Drake University, where he also supervises the preparation of the Drake Undergraduate Social Science Journal. His research and teaching interests include American foreign policy, international political economy, international relations theory, and Latin American politics. He has worked in various capacities on four books on international politics and published numerous journal articles.

Review:

"This book surpasses the others especially in its ability to link the economics of IPE with the politics of IPE. It is also better than most others at striking the balance between treating the students intelligently and making the material accessible."

"Ultimately I chose Lairson and Skidmore because of its early chapters on the historical construction of the world economy (chapters 3 and 4) and its very strong chapter on globalization (chapter 5). These, in combination with the very good nuts and bolts chapter on markets (chapter 2), edged out the other books for this course."

"I find the text far more readable than the one I am currently using. In particular, I like the case studies that are presented in many of the chapters."
