Jakki Wood studied graphic design at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. A successful author/illustrator of children's books, she lives in West Malvern, Worcestershire. Her books for Frances Lincoln are Hole in the Road, Animal Parade, Baby Parade, Noisy Parade and Number Parade; March of the Dinosaurs, Bumper to Bumper, Deep Blue Sea and Fiddle-I-Fee.From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-- A gorgeous alphabetical procession. Clean white pages are filled with full-color paintings of engaging creatures, proceeding from left to right. Wood mixes the familiar bee and caterpillar with the more exotic ibex and hornbill. The animals interact across the double-page spreads and from one page to the next. For example, an orangutan, riding on the back of an okapi, reaches back to an ostrich. A gorilla gives a friendly nudge to the rump in front of him; the flip of the page reveals that it belongs to a hippopotamus. Quetzals, quails, a quokka, and a quoll more than fill the quota of "Q" words. One quibble is the use of a uakari, pronounced "wah-kahr-ee," for the letter "U." Ann Jonas's Aardvarks, Disembark! (Greenwillow, 1990) sets an alphabetical parade in reverse order, in the frame of a Noah's Ark story, and includes lots more animals, some of which are extinct or endangered. Wood's straightforward ABC is fine just the way it is. A lovely picture book. --Jacqueline Elsner, Athens Regional Library, GA
