Silly Fred Pig decides to be more serious, like a beaver, only to discover that life is not much fun without somersaults and song.

PreSchool-Grade 1 --Another appealing--but hardly new--approach to the "be yourself" theme. Fred is a happy-go-lucky little pig, always singing silly nonsense ditties and doing somersaults--until he meets a foul-tempered, down-on-life beaver who lambastes Fred's silliness. The poor pig is devastated, and vows never to be silly again, in spite of his parents' encouragement--until he sees the beaver for what he is, and retreats to his silly old self. Chartier's illustrations give the story an autumn setting, filling the pages with fall greens, reds, and rusts. Interiors have homey, cozy qualities, while pictures of Fred's parents show just where he gets his silliness. This good-natured pig family is irresistible, and children are sure to find their antics very funny. An upbeat romp that's easy enough for beginning readers.
