PreSchool-Grade 1-- On a fine spring day, Hugo, a lively pup, and his owner enjoy an outing in the park. Against his owner's wishes, Hugo is bound and determined to be in the middle of all the action: he invites himself to a picnic, performs with a roller skating singer, and joins some runners on a jog. His owner is able to dissuade him from all of these activities, but then Hugo comes face to face with a swan and the chase is on. Rockwell's illustrations are big, bold, and colorful, and her text is easy enough for beginning readers. Her park is an enchanting little world with people of every age, race, and gender enjoying the pleasures of the day. Despite his mishaps, Hugo's owner laughs and assures him that he loves him very much--an important message for small children. Young readers will fall in love with Hugo, too. --Janet DiGianni, North Andover High School, MA
