Using the theme of the automobile as a symbol of the American dream, each of these books is a photographic impression of the cars that fueled the fantasies of generations of Americans. Hirsch focuses primarily on the chromed and finned stylizations of the Fifies and high-powered pony cars of the Sixties, offering 65 examples of cars that continue to inspire automotive passions. The text accompanying the photos includes a list of each car's technical specifications and accessories and a brief narrative extolling its unique, unusual, or lovable characteristics. Written in a light, chatty style, these passages are often more entertaining than informative. As a photographic survey of memorable and collectible cars, the book is appropriate for public libraries. Salmieri chose to portray the car that for decades has represented the ultimate symbol of power, status, and success. His book is a collection of portraits, many of which are hand colored. The photographs range from early- to late-model Cadillacs and record their opulence and elegance as well as their states of disrepair and abandonment. Documenting the car and the artist's efforts, Edwards's stylish prose complements the photography and helps create a polished and attractive work. Public and academic libraries that can afford it should consider adding this to their photography collections. David Van de Streek, Pennsylvania State Univ. Lib., York
