"Oh, the game was very different in my day from what it's like today. I don't mean just that the fences were further back and the ball was deader and things like that. I mean it was more fun to play ball then." - Davy JonesFirst published in 1966, The Glory of Their Times is a universally hailed classic. A loving look back at the way baseball used to be, and the legends who played the game--immortals like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and many others--it's a delightfully evocative work full of fascinating characters and wonderful anecdotes. This is also the story of author Lawrence S. Ritter's six year quest to find the heroes of a bygone era. He interviewed more than two dozen players from the turn of the century and the decades shortly thereafter, including many now in the Baseball Hall of Fame, then let them tell their own stories, in their own words. The scorecard includes Rube Marquard, Chief Meyers, Goose Goslin, Smoky Joe Wood, Wahoo Sam Crawford, and many more. This new audio compilation of the original interviews is great news for baseball fans and anyone who loves old-time tales of America's national pastime.

Review:
"Almost perfect . . . a vivid, gentle, and humorous narrative, accompanied by marvelous photographs."-- Roger Angell, "The New Yorker"Quite simply the best sports book in recent memory."-- Wilfrid Sheed, "The New York Times Book Review""The Glory of Their Times will be around as long as baseball."-- Nelson Algren"I could happily reread every summer for the rest of my life that greatest of all baseball books, "The Glory of Their Times."-- Stephen Jay Gould, "The New York Times Book Review"Warm, happy, exciting . . . It has been a long time since I enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed "The Glory of Their Times. . . The day after I finished it I started reading it all over again."-- Ted Williams"Easily the best baseball book ever produced by anyone."-- "Cleveland Plain Dealer"There's not a dull moment in the whole book."-- "The Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer" . . . It is a very readable, enjoyable chronicle of the six or seven decades of the game that preceded what is often referred to as the modern era. It can easily be enjoyed by anyone who likes good writing, interesting characters and has just a passing knowledge of the game."-- Pete Reynolds, "The Chicago Star"The single best baseball book of all time."-- Red Barber
From the Author:
The Cassette and CD audio versions are the PLAYERS speaking.
I have been asked whether the audiocassette and the audio CD of Glory are simply someone reading the pages of the book. The answer is no. Both of them are copies of the original tapes of the interviews that I recorded in the 1960s, remastered and digitalized to increase claritry and fidelity. What you hear is five hours of the voices of the players themselves talking to me 30-plus years ago.
