‘We have been using the Collins AQA GCSE English Language for Post-16 textbook and teacher guide since September 2017.

The textbooks have been particularly useful across the department – it is very reassuring to know that students are being exposed to texts and practice assessment materials which they have not seen before. We find students are quickly put off by material they feel they are ‘re-doing’. A range of texts that are new to students is also essential for rigorously assessing students in preparation for unseen exams. The structure of the activities in the textbook is very clear for students and the tasks effectively build up the relevant skills for each question type. This is especially important given the variety of different assessment objectives across the exams. The texts that have been chosen are suitably challenging, mirroring the level of texts that students encounter in the exams.

About the Author:

Sheila McCann has had 38 years of secondary English teaching experience, including 26 years as Head of Department in a large 11-18 comprehensive school in the north west. She has also worked for over 25 years as a senior examiner for a leading examination board and, more recently, has been involved in the development of the new specification for GCSE English Language.

Jo Heathcote is an experienced English teacher in the post-16 sector. She has extensive experience as a Principal Examiner for GCSE English Language and was involved in the development of the new specification for GCSE English Language for a major awarding body.
