9780008123390: Nelly Dean

A gripping and heartbreaking novel that reimagines life at Wuthering Heights through the eyes of the Earnshaws’ loyal servant, Nelly Dean.

The servant who would save them all

Young Nelly Dean has been Hindley’s closest companion for as long as she can remember and that is as long as she has known her father’s hand wanted nothing more than to bring her pain. And as long as she has lived freely at the great house, Wuthering Heights, at her mother’s insistence.

When the benevolence of the master, Mr. Earnshaw, brings a wild child into the house, Nelly has to give up playing with her beloved Hindley and be called servant, and follow in her mother’s footsteps and give herself to this family.

Soon Nelly is not the only one in the house who must serve. As Hindley takes his place as heir apparent, Heathcliff is rejected and a reign of violence is begun that cannot be stopped even by the will of Nelly herself. And when the new heir of Wuthering Heights is born, he is almost her own and her will, will be tested as she finds out what it is to truly know thy master and know sacrifice.

Nelly Dean is a wonderment of storytelling, a heartbreaking and enthralling story and a clever acknowledgement to Bronte’s world. It is the story of a woman who is fated to bear the pain of a family that she is unable to leave and unable to save.
