Dark, edgy and unbearably tense, this extraordinarily accomplished first novel is both a love story and a gripping psychological thriller of immense power.
Debbie Sykes is a young college lecturer whose ordered life is about to be changed forever. One stormy winter’s night, waiting for the late train home, Debbie is acutely aware of being alone – the woman who usually shares her evening vigil is not there. Vulnerability turns to fear, though, when she turns to see a sinister figure looming between her and the safety of the street. The next day, she hears that the missing woman has been found murdered by the man they call the Strangler, a brutal killer who dumps his victims on isolated stretches of railway track.
The police renew their efforts to find the murderer before he strikes again, but how much time do they really have? When Debbie’s story is publicized by an unscrupulous journalist, it seems as though the jaws of an invisible trap are beginning to close around her – strange things start to happen and the foundations of Debbie’s life subtly shift. Only Rob Neave, ex-policeman and college security officer, appears aware of the danger but he is distracted by his own tragic past. The clock is ticking, and it will be midnight far sooner than anyone thinks.

‘As much a study in the nature of trust of trust as an exercise in suspense... A mixture of rich characterisation and atmosphere... may well do for Yorkshire what John Harvey achieved for Nottingham’
Sunday Express
The footsteps echoing behind you, the hand reaching out to touch your shoulder, the breath on your neck, the soft whisper in your ear, the nameless terror out there in the dark ... Every woman knows what it’s like to fear the man on the empty road, but what if there really is a man out there and he’s a vicious killer, and he’s stalking you...?
Debbie Sykes is a South Yorkshire commuter with an ordered life. Every Thursday night she waits for her train, along with another young woman on the opposite platform. But one stormy night the woman isn’t there ... The nightmare begins for Debbie when, vunerable and alone, she turns to see the figure of a man looming above her on the darkened railway bridge. The next day she hears that her fellow traveller has been found murdered by the man they call the Strangler, a brutal and clever killer who has already struck three times ...
Desperate to confide in someone, and unable to talk to the damaged but dangerously attractive Rob Neave, ex-policeman and security guard at the college where she teaches, Debbie finds herself telling a would – be journalist about her terrifying encounter. Suddenly she finds her face staring back at her from the local papers, and events begin to spiral out of control. Strange things start to happen, not only to Debbie, but to those around her. Rob Neave is haunted by the possibility that there is a sinister explanation, but even he could not know that Debbie has a stalker – that someone has her in his sights and plans to shut her mouth for good.
