9780007391189: Dead People

Detective Sergeant Glyn Capaldi, in disgrace and exiled from Cardiff to the deep heart of rural Wales, is called to the discovery of a human skeleton at a remote site in the hills during excavation work for a new wind farm. The body, missing its head and hands, is unidentifiable. When other bodies are uncovered, Capaldi's superiors assume that it is either the work of a hit squad or a serial killer, and that the site is just a dumping ground.

Capaldi is not convinced. To him, the remoteness of the location points to local knowledge. However, an apparent suicide in the valley, along with incriminating evidence, appears to back up his superiors' theory. Believing that they have found the killer, they move the investigation to the city to try and discover the identity of the victims. Capaldi is left in place to tidy up the loose ends. He sets about trying to discover a motive among the varied characters that inhabit the area. To achieve this he also has to try and unravel the mystery of who these dead people were and why they were buried in this particular location all those years ago.

Review:

“Hutton's absorbing second mystery featuring Det. Sgt. Glyn Capaldi (after 2013's Good People) finds the disgraced detective stationed so deep in the wilds of Wales that he's literally investigating crimes against sheep...Hutton is definitely a writer to watch” ―Publishers Weekly

“Witty and wicked, Dead People follows Hutton's debut, Good People and sets the stage for a third entry. A fresh voice in crime fiction, Hutton invests this gripping novel with an intricate plot, intriguing characters, an insular community and inspired prose--and it's a winner in every way.” ―Richmond Time-Dispatch

“Fans of gritty British crime fiction will welcome Hutton's twisty first novel, set in Wales.” ―Publishers Weekly on Good People

“Everyone who thinks Ian Rankin doesn't write fast enough should give newcomer Hutton a try. The plot twists are cunning, and Glyn Capaldi is the most appealing antihero this side of John Rebus.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Good People

“Shortlisted for the 2012 Crime Writers' Association's John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger for best first novel, this is a stunningly dark debut. The first person narrative keeps it personal, making the detective's vulnerabilities that much more intense.” ―Library Journal on Good People

“Smart, fast-moving, and hard-hitting, this is a crime thriller with a witty edge to it.” ―The Northern Echo on Good People

“A kick in the pants to the traditional maverick cop novel by a master of English prose. Good People breaks a stereotype in this pacey debut.” ―The judges of the 2012 CWA John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger on Good People

“Hutton's striking debut gives us a convincing version of the detective as outsider, and a cunning mystery that lasts through to the final pages.” ―Morning Star (UK) on Good People
