9780007344291: Close to the Bone (Logan McRae, Book 8)

The third consecutive No.1 bestselling crime novel from the author of the DI Logan McRae series and Birthdays for the Dead.

Sticks and stones may break your bones...

The first body is chained to a stake: strangled, and stabbed, with a burning tyre around its neck. But is this a gangland execution or something much darker?

Someone’s leaving little knots of bones on DI Logan McRae’s doorstep, but he’s got bigger concerns. Rival drug gangs are fighting over product and territory; two teenage lovers are missing; someone’s crippling Asian immigrants; and Logan’s been lumbered with an ambitious new Detective Sergeant and gained the unwelcome attention of the local crime boss.

When another body turns up, the similarities between these murders and the plot of a bestselling novel seem like more than just a coincidence. And perhaps those little knots of bones are more important than they look...

About the Author:

Stuart MacBride is the No 1 bestselling author of the Logan McRae series and Birthdays for the Dead.

The McRae novels have won him the CWA’s Dagger in the Library, the Barry Award for Best Debut Novel, and Best Breakthrough Author at the ITV3 Crime Thriller Awards. In 2012 Stuart was inducted into the ITV3 Crime Thriller Hall of Fame.

Stuart’s other works include Halfhead, a near-future thriller, Sawbones, a novella aimed at adult emergent readers, and several short stories.

He lives in the north-east of Scotland with his wife, Fiona and cat, Grendel.

From Booklist:

Logan McRae is doing his best to carry on after the harrowing events of Shatter the Bones (2012). His girlfriend, Samantha, is still in the hospital, and his grip on reality is slipping (“Like it or not, you’re still alive” is the reminder taped to his mirror)—good thing there’s plenty of crime to keep his mind off things. A high-profile movie is being filmed on his Aberdeen, Scotland, beat, and someone is reenacting occult scenes from the hit novel it’s based on, right down to the bleeding, burning, and hanging of suspected witches. Someone else is battering Asian men, who refuse to identify a culprit. And the aging Wee Hamish is still trying to bestow his criminal empire on McRae, earning the police detective unwelcome attention from Reuben, the thug who actually wants to inherit. This eighth series installment delivers everything MacBride’s fans have come to expect: knotty plotting, gruesome crime scenes, swinging gallows humor, and some of the most creative cursing in contemporary crime fiction. An extremely solid follow-up to last year’s return-to-form. --Keir Graff
