9780007203307: The Righteous Men

A teenage computer prodigy is strangled in Mumbai. A far-right extremist is killed in a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest. A wealthy businessman is murdered in Thailand. A pimp in Brooklyn is found stabbed to death and mysteriously covered by a brown shroud.

What connects the victims is an ancient prophecy that foretells the end of everything. Now it's up to fledgling New York Times reporter Will Monroe to prevent it. But his investigation could cost Monroe the woman he loves, as it leads him into a dangerous shadow world of fundamentalist religion, mysticism, and biblical prophecies—and toward a set of ancient texts that could save humankind . . . or destroy every man, woman, and child on the face of the Earth.

About the Author:

Sam Bourne is the literary pseudonym of Jonathan Freedland, an award-winning British journalist and broadcaster. He is a weekly columnist for the Guardian (UK), having served as that paper’s Washington correspondent. His work has appeared in the New York Times, the New York Review of Books, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek, and the New Republic. He is a regular contributor to the Jewish Chronicle (UK) and presents BBC Radio 4’s contemporary history series The Long View.

Bourne is the author of the New York Times and number one UK bestseller The Righteous Men, which has been translated into twenty-eight languages, and The Last Testament. He has also written two nonfiction works, Jacob’s Gift and Bring Home the Revolution. He lives in London with his wife and two children.

From AudioFile:

Dennis Boutsikaris relates a story of dark intrigue with stylish articulation of diverse characters around the world, using distinct Jewish accents and lyrical tones to set characters apart. For Will Monroe, stories in the NEW YORK TIMES of righteous men being murdered worldwide are at first simply curious. When his pregnant wife is kidnapped, it becomes personal. Dennis Boutsikaris's delivery conveys a sense of mystery and terror that ratchets up the tension. A relentless chase begins that involves New York's Hassidic community, strange Kabbalah experts, and the identity of The Apostle, only whispered about in legends. Boutsikaris excels, yet he cannot overcome Monroe's unsympathetic character and a plot filled with unlikely coincidences. A religious conspiracy thriller like no other. The end of the world is coming - one body at a time.
