Family prejudice forces a young couple to flee to Glasgow in World War One, where tragedy and deceit shapes their future. They called her Auld Nally - the local moneylender in one of Glasgow's roughest areas, Inchcraig. But once she'd been Alice McInally, beautiful and loved by her childhood sweetheart. She hadn't anticipated the outcry when they announced their betrothal - as he was Catholic and she was Protestant. Cast out by their well-to-do families, the couple's hope of a bright future flounders in the realities of war-torn Glasgow, and Alice ends up struggling to make ends meet in the only way she can. Somehow, she will win respectability for the children in her care - even if that means telling a lie with the best of intentions...

Review:

'Daisy's Wars': Keep the hankies nearby for this truly beautiful, bittersweet story of love, loss and an indomitable woman who refuses to be broken.' Daily Record 'Second Sight': 'Original, dramatic and moving, this is a fine tale told with compassion.' Daily Mail 'The Holy City': 'A hugely absorbing story. Henderson brings the horror and pain of wartime experiences vividly to life with vigorous humour, commonsense wisdom and vitality.' Observer 'Finding Peggy': 'A warm and vivid memory of Glasgow life -- it provokes nostalgia and anger in equal measure. Apart from anything else, this is a gripping story, told with real passion.' Magnus Linklater 'Bloody Mary': 'A novel full of the rich detail of domestic lives, told with humour and sharpness.' Scotland on Sunday 'The Last Wanderer': 'Hearfelt and relevant...full of a larger-than-life cast with more than a touch of the vital spark about them.' Glasgow Herald
