9780007140091: Oscar and Hoo Forever

One morning, the little cloud Hoo is feeling very sad. He misses his family. Little by little, he starts to shrink. His dear friend Oscar is very worried. Hoo must find his family again, or he might disappear altogether! "But I don’t want to leave you!" wails Hoo. Then Oscar has the answer. He is a great dreamer. Perhaps he can find Hoo's family in his dreams. The two friends close their eyes and find themselves flying until they reach the sea. All of a sudden, the sky grows dark. A storm is approaching, and Oscar is scared until Hoo spots his flock! Now Hoo knows he will always find his family in his dreams. And Oscar and Hoo can be together forever. A warm and gentle story of friendship, blending fantasy and reality to lyrical effect, illustrated by Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Dudok de Wit.

About the Author:

THEO was born in France in 1963. As a child he collected stamps, stones, and -- like Oscar -- dreams. Theo has worked in children's television in the UK, France, Germany and Spain for more than ten years. MICHAEL DUDOK DE WIT was born in Holland in 1953. He has directed and animated many award-winning commercials for television and cinema, and teaches animation, as well as illustrating books. Michael's short animated film, 'Father and Daughter' won both an Oscar and a BAFTA award.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 2–A sequel to Oscar and Hoo (Collins, 2002), this quirky import may leave readers puzzled. A boy and his sidekick, a small cumulus cloud, confront bullies on the way to school. Hoo helps Oscar out by befuddling the tough guys in a hazy mist. Later on, it's Oscar who does a good turn when his pal confesses that he is homesick for his cloud flock. Hoo's shrinking concerns Oscar until the boy decides to fluff the languishing cloud up with bathwater steam. This bit of fuzzy logic works until bedtime when Oscar tritely asserts that he can reunite Hoo with his flock "In our dreams! Where everything is possible." After various airborne adventures, the travelers find the little cloud's native flock. In the morning, they conclude that Hoo doesn't have to leave his friend because they can visit his flock each night as they sleep. The retro-cartoon look of the illustrations only adds to the oddness of this tale.– Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA
