9780007105175: Ascension: Clubs, drugs and the eternal high

Cameron Dante offers the real story of what goes on in the clubs, from the era of Acid House to the Ibiza boom and beyond.

Cameron Dante has led a chequered life. He has been a gang member, a champion breakdancer, homeless, a top DJ and a rapper with songs in the Top Ten.

As the pressures of fame grew, he took to drugs as a means of coping. A resident in Ibiza, he saw it all, from the wild parties to prisons and gun fights. As the drugs on the scene got harder, he started to see deaths among his friends. His life of success and excess led to a crisis point in which he finally asked himself where his life was going: would he end up dead on the street after a cocaine fix, or was there something more?

Cameron Dante’s story takes us through an unforgettable era exploring clubs, drugs and the eternal high.

Review:

Ascension is quite some trip. Cameron Dante, one-time break-dance champion, rapper with the chart-topping Bizarre Inc, DJ, prodigious partaker of raves and class-A drugs, relives his journey in search of the eternal high. It's fast and furious from the start, providing a fascinating insight into the peaks and troughs of the oft-maligned dance culture that took him close to the edge of heaven.

Close, that is, because he danced perilously with death (he recounts with brutal honesty the troubles he encountered in descending further into the underworld of clubs and drugs). But close, too, in terms of the ecstasy of the communal "buzz: it feels so deep, so spiritual that I never want to leave".

But the simple laws of physics state that what comes up must also go down. While he can't and won't deny the chemistry of cocaine, he spells out the uglier side effects too. Not that he ever takes the been-there-done-that moral high ground--Ascension is refreshing because it doesn't preach. Although he finds God, only a few lines are devoted to his final discovery. There is no triumphal affirmation of journey's end but a sense that it is only just beginning.

This is a compelling account of one man's search for depth beyond the shallows of our culture. Try it, and you could be hooked. --Brian Draper

From the Back Cover:

Born. Got high. Went on the run. Came back. Went up. Went down. Up and down. Up and down. Joined the band. Got disillusioned. Met Tori. No cash. Stale clubs. Stale drugs. Stale career. Fresh start.

Cameron Dante has been there – wild parties and prisons, gun fights and ecstasy-deaths. His gripping story moves from his early days as a breakdancing champion to rapping at the top of the British charts, with a large dose of Ibiza in between.

But between the highs are the lows that never seem to go away. What about the emotional scars left by homelessness? Or the depression, greed and insatiable desire for that all-important fifteen minutes of fame? How, in the end, can we reach the eternal high?

Cameron lays out his riveting and unforgettable story in what is far from a virtuous 'look at me now' autobiography. Written by one who has been there, done that and enjoyed a fair bit of it, Ascension will fascinate, challenge and inspire.

'Prozac Nation' sent thousands to GP's for anti-depressants, but 'Ascension' points its readers higher.
