Grade 10-12-- Watson's collection of short stories is a cut above the usual YA fare: his command of the written word makes for a deceptively simple and smoothly flowing narrative, and the issues about which he writes are challenging to say the least. These nine stories explore the darker, less pleasant characteristics of modern-day, "civilized" people; and yet with a great deal of cleverness and humor they somehow manage to celebrate the essential goodness and nobility of spirit that mark humankind. These are not stories for average readers, however. The Briticisms alone (slang expressions, cricket terminology, etc.) will cause some readers to stumble, and the differences between American and British society will give others pause. Rather, these are stories for more discerning readers who can grapple and come to terms with issues of racism, blind hatred, violence, and intellectual fascism. For them, Make Your Move will be thought-provoking and memorable. --Laura McCutcheon, St. Catherine's School, Richmond, VA
