Little Bean is playing boisterously indoors with her friend the dog, but a vase gets broken and she is sent outside. When Nice Paul, the little boy from next door, brings back her missing doll, Little Bean decides that maybe other children can be fun too - and they are soon best friends.

Ages 3-6. Little Bean and her dog, Bouncer, are playing inside with pots and pans and wooden spoons, when a stern parental voice invites them to go out into the yard. Lots to do there, on the slide and in the playhouse and on the tricycle, but she and Bouncer manage to send her favorite bear over the wall. When it is returned by a neighbor and her little boy, Little Bean runs inside, pries Daddy from his computer, and gets the bear back; and the little boy, "Nice Paul," gets to stay and play. Little Bean's roundheaded, pigtailed charm, the freshness of the watercolors, and the artless ordinariness of the afternoon are warm and inviting. Gentle without bathos, reassuring without sentimentality, and straightforward without simplemindedness, this is sure to win hearts at lapsit and read-aloud time. GraceAnne A. DeCandido
