Tales of adventure and drama in Nepal as John Blashford-Snell and Rula Lenska track down mysterious giant elephants – thought to have close links to the mammoth.
Rumours began to filter out of Nepal ten years ago that there was a giant mammoth raiding the hunting grounds of Nepalese tribesmen.
Who better to investigate than renowned explorer and conservationist John Blashford-Snell? With Rula Lenska and a team of adventurers in tow, Blashford-Snell made a series of expeditions over many years, tracking giant footprints, fodder trails and dung piles until at last they came upon a pair of giant elephants. When he took evidence home, scientists confirmed that they did indeed have links with prehistoric elephants. It’s a characteristic ‘Blashers’-style tale – full of adventure, danger, excitement and humour.

In 1987 rumours began to filter out of Nepal of a giant mammoth raiding the hunting grounds of Nepalese tribesmen. When a traveller returned with convincing photographs, renowned Royal Engineer, explorer and conservationist John Blashford Snell determined to mount an investigation.
Gathering together a team of expert trackers, sharp-eyed Nepalese boatmen, elephant handlers and naturalists, and aided in his search by Rula Lenska, equally well known for her work with endangered animals, Blashford Snell led a series of expeditions in pursuit of 'the beast of Bardia'. Enduring the harshest conditions, they listened to the stories of the forest people, fended off charging tigers and rampaging elephants and made one of the first descents of the tumultuous Peacock River. Gradually they discovered footprints here, fodder trails there, and finally sighted one giant elephant, then another… On examination of the evidence, scientists confirmed that the 'mammoths' did indeed share features with the prehistoric elephant.
Containing the first fabulous photographs of the giant elephants themselves, 'Mammoth Hunt' is a riveting tale of adventure, danger and discovery.
