Mike Leigh, the satirist of the suburbs, has been one of the great mavericks and creative geniuses of British stage, cinema and television since his first film, "Bleak Moments", was released in 1970. Since then his works have included "Nuts in May", "Goose-Pimples" and "Life is Sweet". He has worked with many of Britain's leading actors, including Tim Roth, Timothy Spall, David Thewlis and Jane Horrocks, but his longest and most fruitful collaboration has been with his wife Alison Steadman. He is famous for his way of working with actors to produce characters and a script which "emerge" from lengthy working sessions.

Mike Leigh has been one of the great mavericks and creative geniuses of British stage, cinema and television since his first film, ' Bleak Moments', burst on an unsuspecting public in 1971. Since then, films like' Nuts in May, Life is Sweet, High Hopes, Naked, Secret and Lies', he has produced a body of work that is idiosyncratic, controversial, often hilarious and always acutely sensitive to the human condition. His longest and most fruitful collaboration has been with his wife Alison Steadman, whose Beverly in 'Abigail's Party' has become a by word for comic grotesquerie.
Mike Leigh is famous throughout the world for his unique way of working with actors to produce characters with a script which emerge from months of improvisation and rehearsals.
‘There are few biographies as deeply felt as Michael Coveney's superb study… a book which combines a lucid account of the lugubrious Jewish Salfordian's life and times with a truly powerful championing of Leigh's place at the forefront of contemporary English culture… there is an enormous amount of insight into this very complex, troubled and obsessively brilliant man whose work will be seen and talked about long after we are all out of print.’
