Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born in Germany in 1906, child of a comfortable, middle class family, and in the early 1930s began upon a brilliant academic career. About the same time Germany saw the rise of Adolf Hitler and the beginning of the persecution of the Jews. Before long, Bonhoeffer was involved in the Church struggle against Hitler,a struggle which split the Church and led some of its members to join the attempts on itler's life. After one such attempt in April 1943, Bonhoeffer was arrested. e spent two years in prison before being executed shortly before the end of the Second World War. This biography, written by his closest friend, Eberhard Bethge, shows Bonhoeffer as family man and theologian, diplomat and ecumenist. Above all it shows the amazing spirit that shone through everything and made him one of the most inspiring figures of the century.
