9780004140964: Funky Junk: in association with This Morning

FUNKY IDEAS TO JAZZ UP YOUR JUNK! Flea markets, auctions, skips, salvage yards, the attic – junk is everywhere. Funky Junk is about turning junk into stylish and contemporary items – and for as little money as possible!

In Funky Junk, Stewart & Sally Walton explore different sources for junk, look at inspirational funky junk and then show you exactly how you can transform your own junk finds. This isn’t about antiques and restoration – it’s about finding something with potential, whether its a broken chair or an old jumper, and turning into something you will love having in your home.

Published to coincide with the 10-week series running on the hugely popular ‘This Morning’ starting in September 1999, Funky Junk contains projects shown on the television, and the book will also be advertised on-screen. But as Stewart & Sally explain, each junk find is unique so the aim of Funky Junk is to equip readers with the inspiration and skills to transform their own junk – this book will be useful for years!

There are 20 step-by-step projects which show how to transform your junk with paint, mosaic and a range of other techniques.

The chapters include * Looking for junk * Inspiration * Practical Matters * 20 step-by-step projects

Review:

Already well-known from television and previous books on room and furniture transformation, Stewart Walton and Sally Walton here reveal their addiction to "junk" and its potential for transformation. Exuberant and quirky, this book guides you towards finding and treating otherwise undistinguished items to produce unique effects--at affordable prices. The first step is to find the cheap raw materials. Stewart and Sally's use of the word "junk" is rather liberal--some items would be classed as "antique"--but they give some useful advice on how to seek it out. These include hiring a stall at a charity market to get a sneaky first look at everyone else's merchandise, as well as tips on good practices for auctions and how to build up contacts in the second-hand market.

Then follows general advice about what to look for, together with photos of a selection of frumpy items ripe for a colourful Funky Junk makeover. Among other inspiring ideas are the covering of walls or a door with old sheets of music and some very unusual picture frames! More specific guidance comes with 20 individual quick projects which show the step-by-step customising of some genuine junk. These makeovers include safety advice for both you and your furniture and the "craft for kids" section will allow you to involve the family in your junk transforming antics. Finally, the "Practical Matters" chapter discusses the most useful tools and surface preparation techniques to employ. These, along with an index and list of stockists, will start you off admirably on any "junk funking" ventures. --Fiona Murphy
