FOODS FOR MIND AND BODY

• a clear and concise explanation of nutrition

Food is much more than just fuel. The link between nutrition and health, mood, and appetite are now well established; when we eat well, in nutritional terms, we feel good all over; a poor diet saps the constitution, producing low-grade performance, mental lethargy, vague aches and pains. Eastern cultures have long understood that food can be a positive agent for health and that different mental, physical and spiritual states need different kinds of nutrition. Now it is being recognised in the West that choosing foods that sustain and heal, and learning to avoid foods that harm, can promote well being and optimum functioning in all aspects of our lives.

'Foods for Mind and Body' shows you how to harness the healing power of food successfully and how you can adapt your eating pattern to prevent disease and promote positive health. Divided into three sections, it covers the nutritional needs of people of all ages, offers an index of positive foods, and lists ailments that can be helped by a change in eating habits.

Part One, Food for Life, examines the physical, mental and emotional aspects of daily living from the teens to the third age. It offers dietary and nutritional advice, suggests self-help ideas and encourages suitable exercise for the promotion of health in all three aspects.

Part Two, The Food Index, presents a directory of positive foods in their natural groupings, introduced by an explanatory essay on the nature of nutrition. Energy values for each food are supplied, together with an at-a-glance list of what they can help. Not all positive foods are good for everybody or every condition, and so caution boxes warn of possible side-effects; there are also Fast Food Aid boxes and tips on how to raid the larder for simple yet effective first aid remedies.

Part Three, Ailments that Food Can Help to Heal, is an A-Z of common ailments. Symptoms are listed, specific foods recommended and advice offered on what to eat more of and what to cut down on. A selection of simple recipes shows how appetising a nutritional cure can be and clearly marked Health Warnings indicate when to consult your doctor. A system of cross referencing helps the reader to connect with relevant information in Part One.

Lastly, Part Four, Useful Information, steers the reader through the vitamin maze, demystifies minerals, lists which drugs can have an inhibiting effect on nutritional uptake, and explains the nature and function of food additives; there is also a recommended reading list and an index of useful contacts.
