The Vegetarian Society exists to promote, and provide information on, a vegetarian diet for the benefit of animal welfare, human health and the environment. Established in 1847, the Society is the acknowledged expert on vegetarianism and all aspects relating to the diet, and produces information sheets, leaflets, videos and other material.

The Society runs its own cookery school, Cordon Vert, which provides day, weekend and week courses ranging from their Diploma course and professional tuition to leisure courses for the beginner or the more adventurous cook wanting to expand their repertoire.

The Society also works with major food manufacturers and retailers to improve the quality, quantity and variety of vegetarian food available and administers its own licence scheme for approved products.
