Fans of the brandy-loving, slow-moving Inspector Enrique Alvarez of Mallorca will be delighted to find him in fine fettle in his twenty-first adventure. The characters and the plot structure here are familiar: English expatriates in trouble, living in voluntary exile in beautiful Mallorca, encounter the courteous Alvarez, whose placid demeanor hides a shrewd intelligence inherited from his wily peasant ancestors. Meanwhile, Alvarez sorts through his ambivalent feelings about the changes tourism has brought to the island. Though familiar in tone and structure, this installment features a particularly clever and intricate story line with enough murder, blackmail, and double-crosses to keep the pages turning rapidly. And even better, the inspector falls for the attractive young English cousin of one his chief suspects. From this encounter, we finally learn why Alvarez never married. A must read for any fan and a wonderful introduction for those who have not yet had the pleasure of making the inspector's acquaintance. Stuart Miller
