"Sillitoe's work is distinguished by its honesty, the clean cut of its narrative line, the authenticity and congruence of its detail. The thirty-eight stories put together in 'Collected Stories' strike me as the best part of Sillitoe's life's work, and worthy to rank with the finest things done in that difficult form"
SCOTSMAN
"As a short-story writer he is on the fringe of the V S Pritchett class, along with the justly admired (but unjustly more admired) William Trevor. It is time the magnitude of Sillitoe's achievement was more widely recognised"
DAILY TELEGRAPH
"'Collected Stories' show him at his best. Alan Sillitoe writes effectively and poignantly"
MAIL ON SUNDAY
"As his 'Collected Stories' show convincingly, Sillitoe is, at his best, a master of the genre...Tense, compact and gritty, they speak out with a voice that one recognises at once, with gradtitude, as wholly truthful"
EVENING STANDARD
"Shows a writer who understands the art of the short form"
HAMPSTED & HIGHGATE EXPRESS
Alan Sillitoe was born in 1928 and left school at 14 to work in various factories. He began writing after four years in the RAF, and lived for six years in France and Spain. His first stories were printed in the ‘Nottingham Weekly Guardian’. In 1958 ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning’ was published and ‘The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner’, which won the Hawthornden prize for Literature, came out the following year. Both these books were made into films.
