Sophie was brought up on the docks of High Haven where her father, Jacob, is the nightwatchman. The old man is full of stories gleaned from the star-going ships that dock at the port. Greenland's last book, "Take Back Plenty" won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Best Science Fiction Novel.

From the Back Cover:

“YOU KEEP OUT OF HARM’S WAY, SOPHIE FARTHING”

Her father’s advice seemed only sensible. The flying island of High Haven was a dangerous place. So what was she doing down on the docks at midnight, talking to the sinister gentleman with the iron jaw? Where had he come from on his majestic space yacht? And why did he laugh when she spoke of her poor dead mama?

Sophie only wanted to talk to him again. She didn’t really mean to stow away – certainly not on the wrong ship. Her unintended quest is to take Sophie far from home, to the pleasure gardens of the Moon, the grogshops and grime of Lambeth Walk, through the perilous Asteroid Sea and the cruel canyons of Mars where Angels fill the red sky with their ravenous cries.

Meanwhile, on a frozen moon of Jupiter, her destine waits...

“What if Charles Dickens had written a space opera?”
LOCUS

“A plot teeming with finely drawn eccentrics, unravelling a secret history on which the fate of worlds turns... A wonderful book”
INTERZONE

“Every so often a book marks a turning point in science fiction. 'Harm’s Way' is one of them”
STARBURST

About the Author:

Award winning Colin Greenland was born in Dover in 1954 and wrote his first book, about a fire-engine that laid an egg, at the age of five. Since then he has written ‘The Hour of the Thin Ox’, which the ‘Guardian’ said ‘could be a classic’; and its successor, ‘Other Voices’, written to a soundtrack of the Cure, Dead Can Dance, New Order and the Cocteau Twins, which was hailed as ‘a short, sharp and moving tale with an acrid and lingering aftertaste.’
