This is No. 7 in the "Daughters of England" series by Philippa Carr (pseudonym for Jean Plaidy) and it continues with the story of Carlotta, the Love-Child, who caused her family such concern when she eloped with Beau Granville. The story opens after Beau's mysterious disappearance, and Carlotta, not knowing that he has been murdered, still hopes to find him. She is caught up in a Jacobite plot to rescue one of their number from prison, and during an encounter at the Black Boar Inn, makes the acquaintance of Lord Hessenfield, a Jacobite leader whose aim is to bring King James back to England. When Carlotta discovers that she is pregnant, she marries her lifelong friend, Benjie. Carlotta's story is interwoven with that of her younger half-sister Damaris. When a man comes into their lives who bears an uncanny resemblance to Beau Granville, there is rivalry between the sisters which results in disaster for Damaris. Hessenfield returns to England for Carlotta, and she is the not unwilling victim of a kidnapping. In France, at the court of the exiled King, she becomes involved in an atmosphere of intrigue and danger. Then there is Clarissa, Carlotta's daughter, whom Damaris has loved dearly... The story takes place against a background of early eighteenth-century England, when Queen Anne was on the throne, but when there was still danger from the King over the Water and those who were ready to bring him back. The swift and stirring narrative moves from the cosy ambience of a country residence to the warrens of London's underworld, and from the society of aristocratic exiles in Paris to the slums of that city, where Damaris wanders in search of a child and her own happiness
