Review:

When Rachel was young, her father wanted her to marry a man who could "unite two good farms." But Rachel's heart and hand went to handsome, black-eyed Josi Evans, a proud tenant farmer who, in both social status and age, was decidedly her junior. As the story opens, Catrin, Rachel and Josi's eighteen-year-old daughter, awaits the arrival of her elder brother Tom, home from Oxford for the summer. She is full of news: the hay is ready for cutting, their mother is very ill, and their father is gone, "off with one of his women... A special one, perhaps. Anyway, he's set up house with her and their baby." Tom responds with predictable shock and determines to bring their father home just as soon as Edward, his Oxford roommate, finishes his imminent visit. The fact that Catrin flushes every time she hears Edward's name is only noticed by Nano, the family's life-long servant. With the wild and beautiful landscape of early World War I Wales as a backdrop, the Evans family - along with their friends, foes, neighbors, and servants - struggle to understand and come to terms with personal pain and shame in the midst of an increasingly urgent and demanding national crisis, making A Small Country a memorable and abundantly rewarding read. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Jesse Larsen
