Professor Sir Ludwig "Poppa" Guttmann, CBE is best known as the visionary founder of the Paralympic Games. It is thanks largely to him that, from a small archery competition in 1948 involving 16 paralysed British war veterans, evolved a major international sporting event featuring elite athletes with all kinds of disabilities. Asked to run a spinal injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital by a British government anticipating the worst as the second front began in 1944, he single-handedly revolutionised the care of paralysed servicemen. The Centre opened on the 1st of February 1944 with 26 beds and so a new era started for spinal injuries patients. Guttmann introduced a whole new approach to the way tetraplegic and paraplegic patients were treated from the initial stages of injury until final resettlement.

The cover has a gilded title on the spine, and only appears to have some very minor marks on it. The dust jacket is also in good condition, though it is slightly more worn than the hardcover. It too has minor visible markings that are more noticeable than the hard cover, and also has some very minor fraying in places along the edges. Inside, the price of the book appears to have been clipped. The pages of the book are in very good condition, with no visible discolouration or markings on them, nor any issues with tears. There is however a very minor issue with a section of pages, where a small piece of some pages has folded inwards, but not torn. This issue is only obviously noticeable when the book is closed, as the pages in question bunch up together. There are photographs on some pages, and these too are in very good condition.
