The author is the last surviving member of the original Bloomsbury group. Most of its leading members she knew well and this book contains many of her memories of them. It also contains her private thoughts on the complex relations between herself, her husband, Dora Carrington and Lytton Strachey.

Frances Partridge was born in Bedford Square in 1900. Family friends included Henry James, Conan Doyle and various members of the Strachey family. She has translated many books and with her husband Ralph edited the Greville Memoirs.
