Judith Kerr was born in Berlin, the daughter of a distinguished German writer. She left Germany with her family in 1933 to escape from the Nazis and they arrived in England in 1936, having spent the intervening years in Switzerland and France.
She was married to the writer Nigel Kneale.Their daughter Tacy is an artist, and their son Matthew is an acclaimed novelist.
In 2012, Judith was awarded an OBE for her services to children’s literature and Holocaust education

'Time to go,' says Mr Monkey to Mrs Monkey. Noah had finished building the ark, God had told him to call the animals and the rain was beginning to fall. But Mrs Monkey was not ready. She wanted a little fruit to eat on the trip. 'A nice mixture,' she thought. Only she took an awfully long time to collect her fruit, and by then the ark had floated away!
How she finally reaches the ark needs more than a little intervention from God and a friendly animal or two – but then Mrs Monkey still manages to pull a heavenly surprise out of the bag.
