‘fast paced and compelling, full of satisfying macabre touches – Cirque du Freak explores the powerful fascination of the dangerous and unnatural and also, movingly, the obligations of friendship’
J. K. Rowling
"I read Cirque Du Freak last week. I loved it. I love the way you manage to juggle the funny with the unpleasant, the affection with the hurt. It's
‘Brilliant, macabre tale.’
“Get your teeth into it!”
THE VOICE OF TERROR
As an author, there are some things you can't control, such as audio adaptations of your books. Your publisher hires someone to take your words and do what he or she likes with them, and there's nothing you can do to influence the outcome.
With CIRQUE DU FREAK, I struck lucky. Alan Cumming -- an actor of remarkable variety -- does a wonderfully freaky job of bringing the various Cirque characters to life, hitting all the right notes in the process. A dazzling array of voices, creepily perfect delivery, and truly menacing dips in tone and volume (combined with an eerie original score by Peter Rinne) will have you digging your nails into the sides of your tape recorder ... too frightened to listen to more ... too transfixed to turn it off!
Although abridged, this audio book has an appeal all of its own, and is a more than worthy companion piece to the book. I recommend it most thoroughly (and that's a genuine recommendation -- I'm not saying it to make more money!).
HarperCollins have managed to get Alan to record THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT as well. For that I'm truly, truly grateful. Roll on November ...
