Up for auction is an extremely scarce bound collection of newspapers announcing the death and funeral of President James A. Garfield, who died on September 19, 1881, two and a half months after being shot. This massive folio measures approximately 26 x 22.75 and is bound in 3/4 leather. This volume, part of a larger set, includes over 160 total papers from Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington Territory, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. In worn condition, with wear to boards, primarily along the edges and corners. Loss of some binding to head and heel of spine. Hinges are worn, primarily at the front and back of the book, which will require restoration or rebinding. Some toning and foxing to pages, along with chipping to edges and corners. Some blue-colored inscriptions on some pages. Filled with a wide array of illustrations throughout, including thousands of advertisements, classifieds, and other notices. An extremely rare look at American reactions to the death of President Garfield, with coverage and opinions varying widely across geographic and political lines.
