Book Description 1761. Book Condition: Good. Uppsala, (E. Ziervogel, 1761). 4:o. (4),321,(1) pp. Brown half morocco binding with raised binds, gilt title on spine and sprinkled edges (K. Hässler). Partly browned and with some damp stains and foxing. Title page with a couple of minor stains. Faint damp marks in the upper corner on p. 85-88. Pages 1-8 incorrectly bound. Contemporary inscription to prosecuting counsel Bröms on the title page. With Nils Fries' bookplate. Lidén Catalogus disputationum 53. Hebbe Den svenska lantbrukslitteraturen 614. With parallel text in Latin and Swedish and also with a printed dedication to Crown prince Gustav. A second edition with only Swedish text was printed in 1778 and the work was translated to German, French, Spanish and English. In "Åkerbrukets chemiska grunder" Wallerius describes, among other things, the importance of soil quality for the growth process, and the transformation of fertilizer into nourishment for plants. This pioneer work has credited Wallerius as the proper founder of agricultural chemistry. "Dictionary of scientific biography" writes: "Wallerius established as a fundamental, necessary principle that agricultural chemistry should be based on comparative study of the chemical composition not only of plants but also of the earth in which they grow.".
