About this Item
Printed bond, 17 1/2 x 14 inches. Upper left corner gone, some chipping at edges, extensive old tape repairs. Fair only. A very attractive engraved Confederate defense bond, about half of which is occupied by the following text, within a decorative border with vignettes of a ship and a railroad: "City of New Orleans, State of Louisiana Know all Men by these Presents, That the City of New Orleans is indebted to the Bearer in the sum of ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS, which sum the said City engages to pay, in the current money of the Confederate States, at the Office of the City Treasurer, to the said Bearer, in Seven years after the date hereof, with interest at the rate of SIX per Cent. per annum, payable semi=annually, on the Twentieth Day of March and September of each year, on the delivery of the Interest Coupon attached. New Orleans, March 20th, 1862." The number of the bond is filled out as "68" and the dollar amount as "1000," both in manuscript. It is signed in manuscript by the comptroller, mayor (John T. Monroe) and treasurer (Adam Giffen). Below the decorative border are fourteen engraved interest coupons for $30 each, payable at various future dates, with the number, "62," written in by hand on each, and each signed by Giffen as treasurer.
