Book Description: Shroud, Publishers, Buffalo., 1955. 1955. First edition, true first hardcover binding state (black cloth with gilt stamping on spine, and with limitation label on limitation page) LIMITED TO ONLY A "STATED" 50 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES; the label is then signed by the publisher, Kenneth J. Krueger, "This is one of 50 specially bound copies [then signed in hand and in type] Kenneth J. Krueger," This copy is in the yellow-state dust jacket with an ad for THE MOON MAKEER and with the publisher's address as Hamburg, New York. This later yellow dust jacket is said to have been printed for this hardcover state, and is as issued by the publisher (though all states of the book can be found in any given dust jacket state). Chalker & Owings (pages 4403-4404)note that all the copies with a label on the limitatioon page are numbered "451-500" (our copy being "465"). Years later other copies were bound in a uniform cloth binding but without the label. As all of the unbound sheets were already numbered, when the publisher did his second hardcover state those books were numbered as well, but WITHOUT THE LABEL ON THE LIMITATION PAGE, which is why Currey (page 322) notes other hardcover numbered copies. The total number of all states is about 1,500 copies, with the 50 first hardcover copies being the most sought-after.
