Book Description: 1975, 1975. SIGNED. KING, Stephen. 'Salem's Lot. Garden City: Doubleday, 1975. Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket. $5200. Rare first edition of King's second novel, inscribed, "For Tim-Best, Stephen King, 9/9/79," in second-issue dust jacket, as always (virtually no first-issue jackets exist). King's breakthrough second novel "gave birth not only to gaggles of vampire stories. but also all kinds of creepy works in general.'Salem's Lot, because of its genuineness, its verve, its originality, its willingness to reflect, expand and celebrate its sources, and, most importantly, its establishment of Stephen King. as a pioneer in a field ripe for re-invention, was germinal and originative of the entire boom in horror fiction" (Horror 100 Best 72). "King's ability, through the overlayering of seemingly irrelevant mundane details, to generate a sense of wrongness found its first full flowering in this novel" (Clute & Grant, 537). First issue dust jackets (of which only a very few are known to exist) had the incorrect printed price of $8.95 and the incorrect "Father Cody" on the front flap. The price mistake was quickly caught while still at the printer, and prices were clipped off these early dust jackets. A new price of $7.95 was added but the incorrect "Father Cody" remained, making them second-issue jackets. Third-issue jackets were completely reprinted, with the correct price and the priest's name corrected to "Father Callahan." Fantasy and Horror 6-203. Underwood & Miller 14. Minor rubbing to edges of bright, about-fine dust jacket. A beautiful copy, desirable inscribed by King. Bookseller Inventory # 60992
Book Description: Garden City Doubleday 1975., 1975. , in Near fine dust jacket His second novel. Inscribed by King in the year of publication: "For ____, from your mother -- / I hope you enjoy it and have a Merry Christmas!" A fine copy in a near fine, corner-clipped second issue dust jacket (with the printed price $7.95 and the reference to "Father Cody" in the flap text), with modest corner rubbing and a strip of offsetting to the rear panel. A very attractive copy of this book, much better than usually found, and with the earliest King inscription we have seen in it. King's early books with contemporary inscriptions are extremely uncommon: the first printings were small and the books didn't sell particularly well, either. Also, King didn't do the extensive author tours that later became the norm for promoting books. The first printings of his novels got larger and larger but it wasn't until about 1980 that his books were bestsellers immediately upon publication. Binding is Hardcover. Book Description: Doubleday, New York, 1975. Hardcover; 1st Printing. Book Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. 1st Edition. This book has a pencil signature/inscription on the front end page: 'To Bonnie from Steve King, H-56'. I do NOT think it is Stephen King's signature and thus am not selling or pricing it as a signed book (in fact, it just looks as if someone named Steve King wrote a gift inscription; no attempt to make it look like Stephen King's signature). Has all the proper points for a 1st printing (First Edition stated and the code Q37 at the gutter of the last text page) in the second issue dustjacket with the publisher's price clip and repricing of $7.95, and the mistake of Father Cody still on the front flap. The book is straight, clean and tight, with slight shelfwear to the spine ends, slight wear to the gilt spine printing and a couple of small, faint surface scuffs/rubs to lower front panel. The dustjacket is lovely: price intact, clean, crisp and bright -- very striking. There is just a touch of edgewear (no chips) and one short, closed, mended edge tear to the upper back flap fold. There is also a tiny previous owner's sticker and the date 9/23/76 upper front pastedown (covered by dustjacket flap). Perhaps the hardest of King's books to find in excellent condition, and this one is extremely nice-looking. 20, 24. Bookseller Inventory # 7894
