Book Description: Philadelphia: Lippincott (1960), 1960. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition of this Pulitzer Prize winning novel and Academy Awarding winning motion picture. Signed by the author. To Kill A Mockingbird has sold several million copies in the decades since publication, never going out of print. While hardcover copies abound because of the numerous printings and book club editions, the first edition (i.e., first printing, which has been estimated at having been 5000 copies) is not only very scarce, it is virtually impossible to find in collectable condition due to a number of factors: a large percentage of copies of the first printing went to libraries; the dust jacket is unlaminated and printed in dark ink, which tends to rub and show the white paper through the ink; and, because it is one of the best-loved books in American literature, copies tend to have been read, handled, passed around, and re-read -- and show the wear and tear of such use. Near fine in a near fine, unrestored dust jacket with a little edge rubbing. An exceptional signed copy: unrestored copies in this condition have almost completely disappeared. Provenance: Nicholas Basbanes. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 819

Book Description: hardcover. Cloth backed boards, d.w. Philadelphia: Lippincott, (1960). First Edition. A very good copy of this important & elusive book of which only 5000 copies were printed. The green cloth spine is unfaded, and the interior of the book is clean and fine. The first issue dust jacket, with the Capote blurb in green, the Joanthan Daniels quote on the back flap, and the Capote photograph of the author on the rear cover, is entirely unrestored. It is price-clipped and worn at the edges and folds, with white crackles showing through the black and brown background. Still a better than usual copy of Lee's first and only novel, which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize. Bookseller Inventory # 170164

Book Description: Philadelphia, London, 1798., 1798. Traduzidas em Portuguez. Small 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, gilt spine divided in 5 compartments, red morocco title label. 322 pp. Influential and impassioned defense of Jay's Treaty by Robert Goodloe Harper (1765-1825), a lawyer and politician. The work is also of maritime interest, because of the exhaustive treatment of French, British and American positions and policies on impressment, privateering, and neutral ships and cargoes. First published in Philadelphia as Observations On the Dispute Between the United States and France it turned out to be an extremely popular work, which had already gone through nineteen editions in 1799. The present edition is one of three published translations into Portuguese. Harper, who used to be extremely pro-French when he lived in South Carolina, had changed position when he moved to Philadelphia. In the present treatise he calls for countermeasures to French attempts to suppress American trade. He does not even exclude a war. It was France who had tried to violate American neutrality, when they tried to involve the United States in the French dispute against England and Spain. Harper argues that, by permitting British ships to seize French goods found on American vessels, the United States had not violated its 1778 treaty with France. Although Harper was considered in his time as a pompous dandy, he did contribute his share to history. As a member of the Ways and Means committee he introduced the modern idea of balanced sectional representation. Until then every state was represented, but Harper moved to reduce the number of members to nine. Also, Harper was one of the founders of the American Colonization Society, and he is credited with suggesting the name "Liberia" for its African settlement. Good copy.- (Binding rubbed; wormholes). Cf. Sabin 30430-30436 (Engl. & Am. eds); Leclerc 891 (3rd Engl. ed. 1797); Eberstadt 114: 256 (1st ed. 1797). Bookseller Inventory # 20832
