This book examines in great detail the extent and nature of the toleration for non-Muslim minorities in the two large Muslim-majority states of Southeast Asia – Indonesia and Malaysia. Set against the backdrop of increasing religious segregation and intolerance in recent years, Indonesia has witnessed an uneasy fluctuation in its traditional devotion to pluralist religious ideals and a tendency toward religious bigotry and state meddling in religious affairs.

The Malaysian chapters deal with religious pluralism in Kuala Lumpur; Christian and Buddhist responses to perceived Muslim encroachment in their affairs; localized Christian minorities resisting and also accommodating hegemonic Muslim or Islamic presence and the intolerance of a dominant Sunni Islamic practice.

Book Description Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book fills a gap in authoritative analyses of the causes of inter-religious conflict and the practice of religious toleration. The rise of more overt expressions of Islamic piety and greater bureaucratization of Islam in both Indonesia and Malaysia over several decades have tested the 'live and let live' philosophy which used to characterize religious expression in these nations. The analyses in each chapter of the book break new ground with contextualized studies of particular and recent incidents of conflict or harassment in a variety of areas - from urban centres to more remote and, even complex, locations. As these studies show, legislation stands or falls on the ability and determination of local authorities to enforce it. 462 pp. Englisch. Seller Inventory # 9789814519649
