Ein namenloser französischer Soldat ist im August 1939 mit dem Zug auf dem Weg zur Front. Während der Fahrt legt er sich Rechenschaft ab über sein - wie er glaubt nutzloses - Leben. An den Vater, der schon 1914 im Ersten Weltkrieg gefallen ist, hat er keine Erinnerungen mehr; nur der vergeblichen Suche nach dessen sterblichen Überresten, auf die er sich als Sechsjähriger mit seiner Mutter begeben hat, kann er sich entsinnen. Ihm scheint, als habe er sein Leben lang nur von einer Uniform in die nächste gewechselt: von der seiner Schule in die Kluft der Anarchisten, von der Uniform des Spanienkämpfers zu der Tracht des avantgardistischen Malers. Jetzt, wo er den Tod vor Augen sieht, begreift er, dass er immer nur Rollen gespielt hat. Sein Leben droht zu enden, bevor es richtig begonnen hat. Doch er überlebt den Fronteinsatz und gerät zunächst in deutsche Gefangenschaft, aus der er schließlich fliehen kann. Das Erlebnis des Krieges aber lässt ihn nicht mehr los, und er beginnt, seine Erfahrungen aufzuzeichnen. Dabei beschreibt er nicht nur sein eigenes Schicksal, sondern erforscht auch das seines Vaters, der dreißig Jahre vor ihm im Ersten Weltkrieg gekämpft hat und zu dessen Opfer geworden ist. So sind seine Aufzeichnungen eine literarische Annäherung an die Sinnlosigkeit der Gewalt, eine autobiografische Spurensuche, in der Vater und Sohn stellvertretend für zwei Generationen am Trauma des Krieges leiden.
